Something in the Water

Water, water, everywhere,
Nor any drop to drink….The Rime of the Ancient Mariner Samuel Taylor Coleridge

On last Wednesday’s show Diva Daddy, Bob Hunnicutt told us about someone’s plan to get TAPS to come to the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta and investigate ghosts. Bob explained how the aquarium, with 8 million gallons of water, is the world’s largest. This sounds like a wonderful backdrop for a show; wouldn’t it be interesting if Jason and Grant should discover a ghost from the Titanic lurking in the Titanic exhibition? Who’s to say it couldn’t happen.

By coincidence, or synchronicity, our guest on the Wednesday January 28th show will be Lee who actually investigates ghosts underwater. How fascinating is that? After all, water does make up most of the earth’s surface.

So, let me take a sip of strawberry flavored ice water….Ahhh. They say eight glasses are good for you, your skin and any diet…Okay, we shall see!

Across the sea Japanese researcher Masuro Emoto has been conducting some interesting studies on the molecular structure of water.

Emoto sought to prove that our thoughts, words, ideas and music, can and does affect the molecular structure of water. In his book The Message of Water Emoto explains how he conducted his research. Photographs of frozen water crystals demonstrate how words can have a positive or detrimental effect on water.

Emoto put his research up for peer review when a paper by him, Dean Radin and others appeared in the September 2006 issue of Explore: The Journal of Science and Healing.

James Randi extended the million dollar challenge to Emoto; something about pseudoscience for the masses. Ah the masses! Methinks they think we’re a dumb bunch.

I once read that today’s water is the same water that’s always been here on earth. It evaporates and returns again and again in the form of rain and snow. Could be that Cleopatra bathed in the water that makes up your bubbling bouillabaisse. If that’s true then it would also be true that tears, whether sorrowful or joyful, would also return.

Let’s look at sorrowful tears a moment---Would the intent and sadness be so sealed into the water of those tears that Emoto’s kind words, music and thoughts not alter their molecular structure? Does time and space have an affect on the water crystals? Let’s take the tears of the castigated and decapitated Anne Boleyn; could Emoto change their molecular structure?

Oh yes the good doctor Masuro Emoto, it is a very romantic notion that the water in my Diet Coke could have been from Einstein's toilet, but it will in no way give me even a single molecule of his intelligence. While Dr.Masuro Emoto's photo essay did go up for peer review it might be a good idea to look at the results of that review. Below is a link from an actual scientist Kristopher Setchfield, BA, Health Science Natural Science Department Castleton State College, Vermont.

Here is an excerpt from the closing of this paper I of course encourage anyone to read the entire study. "After the lengthy review of Emoto’s research methods and results, I have come to believe that Dr. Emoto is offering pseudoscience to the masses in the guise of defensible research. Only time and review by others will tell if there is any truth at the heart of Mr. Emoto’s claims, as Emoto himself thoroughly believes in his findings but does not value the scientific method or community. What is truly fearsome is the great numbers of people that accept his words as proven facts without looking deeper to find out if his claims are truly justified. While I respect Dr. Emoto’s desire to save the Earth’s water from contamination and pollution, unless he can produce a scientific paper and get it published in a scientific journal, I believe that he will continue to be ignored by the scientific community, and his claims will never be soundly proved or disproved." Hey there's that pseudoscience to the masses thing!!

James Randi did extend an offer to Dr.Emoto for the million-dollar challenge one that the good doctor has never accepted. There was also a challenge put out to the company that produces a product known as Aquamantra which is an expensive bottled water with pictures on the label and a mantra like "I am lucky" "I am loved" after chanting the mantra the company claims that the water is changed on the molecular level to make you more loved or lucky. Of course they do not have a mantra for "I am a sucker" here is a link to the company's website the good doctor's name is all over their literature because their product is based on his alleged findings.

And if you believe in Dr.Emoto's findings and you'd have to believe in Aquamantra and if you believe in either of these then I'll give you some magic beans for your cow. Oh and as far as finding ghosts underwater I say go for it. I'm sure just as many will be found underwater as they have been on the surface.

Really good at Wii tennis, BatBoy

What BatBoy said. Thanks for taking the time to find and post Dr. Setchfield's review.

Besides which, it's doubtful that the water from yesteryear is the "same" water of today, if you consider that the hydrogen and oxygen atoms that comprise each molecule separate and reform with other atoms to form either other compounds or other water molecules.

Janice - you wrote "Methinks they think we're a dumb bunch." Nah - I doubt that. I think "they" might think the masses are a bit gullible due to a mere average understanding of science, and that a thorough class or two in research methods and critical thinking would do the masses good. Pseudoscientists count on this not changing.
